Hebrews 11
1IsἜστινnowδὲfaithπίστιςof [things] hoped forἐλπιζομένων[the] assuranceὑπόστασις,of thingsπραγμάτων[the] convictionἔλεγχοςnotοὐbeing seenβλεπομένων·
2Inἐνthisταύτῃforγὰρwere commendedἐμαρτυρήθησανtheοἱancientsπρεσβύτεροι.
3By faithπίστειwe understandνοοῦμενto have been formedκατηρτίσθαιtheτοὺςuniverseαἰῶναςby [the] wordῥήματιof Godθεοῦ,so thatεἰςwhichτὸnotμὴfrom [things]ἐκbeing visibleφαινομένωνthe thingsτὸbeing seenβλεπόμενονhave been madeγεγονέναι.
4By faithΠίστειa more excellentπλείοναsacrificeθυσίανAbelἍβελthanπαρὰCainΚάϊνofferedπροσήνεγκεντῷto Godθεῷ,throughδι’whichἧςhe was testifiedἐμαρτυρήθηto beεἶναιrighteousδίκαιος,bearing witnessμαρτυροῦντοςtoἐπὶtheτοῖςgiftsδώροιςof himαὐτοῦτοῦGodθεοῦ,andκαὶthroughδι’itαὐτῆςhaving diedἀποθανὼνstillἔτιhe speaksλαλεῖ.
5By faithΠίστειEnochἙνὼχwas translatedμετετέθητοῦnotμὴto seeἰδεῖνdeathθάνατον,andκαὶnotοὐχwas he foundηὑρίσκετοbecauseδιότιhad taken upμετέθηκενhimαὐτὸνὁGodθεός·Beforeπρὸforγὰρtheτῆςtranslationμεταθέσεωςhe was commendedμεμαρτύρηταιto have pleasedεὐαρεστηκέναιτῷGodθεῷ,
6Withoutχωρὶςnowδὲfaithπίστεως[it is] impossibleἀδύνατονto please [Him]εὐαρεστῆσαι,To believeπιστεῦσαιforγὰρit behoovesδεῖthe oneτὸνdrawing nearπροσερχόμενοντῷto GodθεῷthatὅτιHe existsἔστινand [that]καὶto thoseτοῖςearnestly seeking outἐκζητοῦσινHimαὐτὸνa rewarderμισθαποδότηςHe becomesγίνεται.
7By faithπίστειhaving been divinely instructedχρηματισθεὶςNoahΝῶεconcerningπερὶthe thingsτῶνnot yetμηδέπωseenβλεπομένωνhaving been moved with fearεὐλαβηθεὶςpreparedκατεσκεύασενan arkκιβωτὸνforεἰς[the] salvationσωτηρίανof theτοῦhouseholdοἴκουof himαὐτοῦ,byδι’whichἧςhe condemnedκατέκρινενtheτὸνworldκόσμον,andκαὶof theτῆςaccording toκατὰfaithπίστινrighteousness [that is]δικαιοσύνηςhe becameἐγένετοheirκληρονόμος.
8By faithΠίστειbeing calledκαλούμενοςAbrahamἈβραὰμobeyedὑπήκουσενto go outἐξελθεῖνintoεἰςa placeτόπονthatὃνhe was goingἤμελλενto receiveλαμβάνεινforεἰςan inheritanceκληρονομίαν,andκαὶwent outἐξῆλθενnotμὴknowingἐπιστάμενοςwhereποῦhe is goingἔρχεται.
9By faithπίστειhe sojournedπαρῴκησενinεἰς[the] landγῆνof theτῆςpromiseἐπαγγελίαςas [in]ὡςa foreign [country]ἀλλοτρίαν,inἐνtentsσκηναῖςhaving dweltκατοικήσαςwithμετὰIsaacἸσαὰκandκαὶJacobἸακὼβtheτῶνjoint-heirsσυγκληρονόμωνof theτῆςpromiseἐπαγγελίαςτῆςsameαὐτῆς·
10He was awaitingἐξεδέχετοforγὰρtheτὴντοὺςfoundationsθεμελίουςhavingἔχουσανcityπόλιν,of whichἧς[the] architectτεχνίτηςandκαὶbuilder [is]δημιουργὸςὁGodθεός.
11By faithπίστειalsoκαὶherselfαὐτῇSarahΣάρρᾳpowerδύναμινforεἰς[the] conceptionκαταβολὴνof seedσπέρματοςreceivedἔλαβενevenκαὶbeyondπαρὰthe opportuneκαιρὸνageἡλικίας,sinceἐπεὶfaithfulπιστὸνshe consideredἡγήσατοthe [One]τὸνhaving promisedἐπαγγειλάμενον·
12Thereforeδιὸalsoκαὶfromἀφ’one manἑνὸςwere bornἐγεννήθησαν,andκαὶheταῦταhaving been as good as deadνενεκρωμένου,asκαθὼςtheτὰstarsἄστραofτοῦheavenοὐρανοῦτῷin multitudeπλήθειandκαὶasὡςtheἡsandἄμμοςἡbyπαρὰtheτὸshoreχεῖλοςof theτῆςseaθαλάσσηςἡcountlessἀναρίθμητος.
13InΚατὰfaithπίστινdiedἀπέθανονtheseοὗτοιallπάντες,notμὴreceivedλαβόντεςtheτὰςpromisesἐπαγγελίας,butἀλλὰfrom afarπόρρωθενthemαὐτὰςhaving seenἰδόντεςandκαὶhaving embraced [them]ἀσπασάμενοι,andκαὶhaving confessedὁμολογήσαντεςthatὅτιstrangersξένοιandκαὶsojournersπαρεπίδημοίthey areεἰσινonἐπὶtheτῆςearthγῆς.
14Thoseοἱforγὰρsuch thingsτοιαῦταsayingλέγοντεςmake manifestἐμφανίζουσινthat [their]ὅτιown countryπατρίδαthey are seekingἐπιζητοῦσιν.
15Andκαὶifεἰindeedμὲνthatἐκείνηςthey rememberedμνημονεύουσινfromἀφ’whereἧςthey came outἐξέβησαν,they would have hadεἶχονἂνopportunityκαιρὸνto returnἀνακάμψαι·
16Nowνῦνhoweverδὲa better [one]κρείττονοςthey stretch forward toὀρέγονται,thatτοῦτ’isἔστινa heavenly [one]ἐπουρανίου.Thereforeδιὸnotοὐκis ashamed ofἐπαισχύνεταιthemαὐτοὺςὁGodθεὸςGodθεὸςto be calledἐπικαλεῖσθαιof themαὐτῶν,He has preparedἡτοίμασενindeedγὰρfor themαὐτοῖςa cityπόλιν.
17By faithΠίστειhas offered upπροσενήνοχενAbrahamἈβραὰμτὸνIsaacἸσαὰκBeing testedπειραζόμενος,evenκαὶ[his]τὸνonly begotten sonμονογενῆwas offering upπροσέφερενthe [one]ὁtheτὰςpromisesἐπαγγελίαςhaving receivedἀναδεξάμενος,
18as toπρὸςwhomὃνit was saidἐλαλήθηὅτιInἘνIsaacἸσαὰκwill be reckonedκληθήσεταίyourσοιoffspringσπέρμα,
19having reasonedλογισάμενοςthatὅτιevenκαὶout fromἐκ[the] deadνεκρῶνto raiseἐγείρεινable [was]δυνατὸςὁGodθεός·from whereὅθενhimαὐτὸνalsoκαὶinἐνa simileπαραβολῇhe receivedἐκομίσατο.
20By faithΠίστειalsoκαὶconcerningπερὶ[the things] comingμελλόντωνblessedεὐλόγησενIsaacἸσαὰκτὸνJacobἸακὼβandκαὶτὸνEsauἨσαῦ.
21By faithπίστειJacobἸακὼβdyingἀποθνῄσκωνeachἕκαστονof theτῶνsonsυἱῶνof JosephἸωσὴφblessedεὐλόγησεν,andκαὶworshipedπροσεκύνησενonἐπὶtheτὸtopἄκρονof theτῆςstaffῥάβδουof himαὐτοῦ.
22By faithπίστειJosephἸωσὴφdyingτελευτῶνconcerningπερὶtheτῆςexodusἐξόδουof theτῶνsonsυἱῶνof IsraelἸσραὴλmade mentionἐμνημόνευσεν,andκαὶconcerningπερὶtheτῶνbonesὀστέωνof himαὐτοῦgave instructionsἐνετείλατο.
23By faithΠίστειMosesΜωϋσῆςhaving been bornγεννηθεὶςwas hiddenἐκρύβηthree monthsτρίμηνονbyὑπὸtheτῶνparentsπατέρωνof himαὐτοῦ,becauseδιότιthey sawεἶδον[was] beautifulἀστεῖονtheτὸlittle childπαιδίονandκαὶnotοὐκthey did fearἐφοβήθησανtheτὸedictδιάταγμαof theτοῦkingβασιλέως.
24By faithπίστειMosesΜωϋσῆςgrownμέγαςhaving becomeγενόμενοςrefusedἠρνήσατοto be calledλέγεσθαι[the] sonυἱὸςof [the] daughterθυγατρὸςof PharaohΦαραώ,
25ratherμᾶλλονhaving chosenἑλόμενοςto suffer affliction withσυγκακουχεῖσθαιtheτῷpeopleλαῷτοῦof Godθεοῦthanἢ[the] temporaryπρόσκαιρονto haveἔχεινof sinἁμαρτίαςenjoymentἀπόλαυσιν,
26greaterμείζοναwealthπλοῦτονhaving esteemedἡγησάμενοςthan theτῶνof EgyptΑἰγύπτουtreasuresθησαυρῶνtheτὸνreproachὀνειδισμὸντοῦof ChristΧριστοῦ,he was lookingἀπέβλεπενforγὰρtowardεἰςtheτὴνrewardμισθαποδοσίαν.
27By faithπίστειhe leftκατέλιπενEgyptΑἴγυπτον,notμὴhaving fearedφοβηθεὶςtheτὸνangerθυμὸνof theτοῦkingβασιλέως,theτὸνforγὰρInvisible [One]ἀόρατονasὡςseeingὁρῶνhe perseveredἐκαρτέρησεν.
28By faithπίστειhe has keptπεποίηκενtheτὸPassoverπάσχαandκαὶtheτὴνsprinklingπρόσχυσινof theτοῦbloodαἵματος,so thatἵναnotμὴthe [one]ὁdestroyingὀλοθρεύωνtheτὰfirstbornπρωτότοκαwould touchθίγῃthemαὐτῶν.
29By faithΠίστειthey passed throughδιέβησανtheτὴνRedἘρυθρὰνSeaΘάλασσανasὡςthroughδιὰdryξηρᾶςlandγῆς,whichἧςan attemptπεῖρανhaving madeλαβόντεςtheοἱEgyptiansΑἰγύπτιοιwere swallowed upκατεπόθησαν.
30By faithπίστειtheτὰwallsτείχηof JerichoἸεριχὼfellἔπεσανhaving been encircledκυκλωθένταforἐπὶsevenἑπτὰdaysἡμέρας.
31By faithπίστειRahabῬαὰβtheἡprostituteπόρνηnotοὐdid perish withσυναπώλετοthoseτοῖςhaving disobeyedἀπειθήσασιν,having receivedδεξαμένηtheτοὺςspiesκατασκόπουςwithμετ’peaceεἰρήνης.
32AndΚαὶwhatτίmoreἔτιshall I sayλέγω;Will failἐπιλείψειmeμεforγὰρtellingδιηγούμενονtheὁtimeχρόνοςofπερὶGideonΓεδεών,BarakΒαράκ,SamsonΣαμψών,JephthahἸεφθάε,DavidΔαυίδalsoτεandκαὶSamuelΣαμουὴλandκαὶtheτῶνprophetsπροφητῶν,
33whoοἳbyδιὰfaithπίστεωςconqueredκατηγωνίσαντοkingdomsβασιλείας,administeredεἰργάσαντοjusticeδικαιοσύνην,obtainedἐπέτυχονpromisesἐπαγγελιῶν,shutἔφραξαν[the] mouthsστόματαof lionsλεόντων,
34quenchedἔσβεσαν[the] powerδύναμινof fireπυρός,escapedἔφυγον[the] mouthsστόματαof [the] swordμαχαίρης,acquired strengthἐδυναμώθησανout ofἀπὸweaknessἀσθενείας,becameἐγενήθησανmightyἰσχυροὶinἐνwarπολέμῳ,[the] armiesπαρεμβολὰςput to flightἔκλινανof foreignersἀλλοτρίων·
35Received backἔλαβονwomenγυναῖκεςbyἐξresurrectionἀναστάσεωςtheτοὺςdeadνεκροὺςof themαὐτῶν·othersἄλλοιthenδὲwere torturedἐτυμπανίσθησαν,notοὐhaving acceptedπροσδεξάμενοιτὴνreleaseἀπολύτρωσιν,so thatἵναa betterκρείττονοςresurrectionἀναστάσεωςthey might obtainτύχωσιν·
36Othersἕτεροιthenδὲof mockingsἐμπαιγμῶνandκαὶof scourgingsμαστίγωνtrialπεῖρανreceivedἔλαβον,in additionἔτιalsoδὲof chainsδεσμῶνandκαὶimprisonmentφυλακῆς·
37They were stonedἐλιθάσθησαν,they were sawed in twoἐπρίσθησαν,byἐνslaughterφόνῳof [the] swordμαχαίρηςthey were killedἀπέθανον,they wanderedπεριῆλθονinἐνsheepskinsμηλωταῖς,inἐνgoats’αἰγείοιςskinsδέρμασιν,being destituteὑστερούμενοι,being oppressedθλιβόμενοι,being mistreatedκακουχούμενοι,
38of whomὧνnotοὐκwasἦνworthyἄξιοςtheὁworldκόσμοςinἐπὶdesertsἐρημίαιςwanderingπλανώμενοιandκαὶmountainsὄρεσιandκαὶcavesσπηλαίοιςandκαὶταῖςholesὀπαῖςof theτῆςearthγῆς·
39Andκαὶallπάντεςhaving been commendedμαρτυρηθέντεςthroughδιὰtheτῆςfaithπίστεωςnotοὐκdid receiveἐκομίσαντοtheτὴνpromiseἐπαγγελίαν,
40τοῦGodθεοῦforπερὶusἡμῶνbetterκρεῖττόνsomethingτιhaving plannedπροβλεψαμένου,so thatἵναnotμὴapart fromχωρὶςusἡμῶνthey should be made perfectτελειωθῶσιν.
